Why its important to work with a rescue

It is important to work with a licensed non profit animal rescue to ensure that the dog you are surrendering is placed in a permanent home and in a safe home. We hear horror stories about animals being:

  • ABUSED: dogs are sold on craigslist to random people. Homes are not visited, references are not checked. Adoption fee is not collected. Dogs are used as bait dogs, fighting dogs, or are sexually\physically abused by sick people.

  • MISTREATED: dogs are given away on facebook or sold on craigslist and end up sitting in a dirty, empty, lonely home with people who are not qualified to be dog owners.

  • BROKEN: the biggest problem we see and that we are helping make an impact is broken dogs. Many dogs we have helped (D, Bear, Onyx, Ella, Charlie) went from rescue to rescue. Not all rescues are equal. Dogs are bounced around and end up with behavioral issues.

If you dump your dog in a sketchy rescue - they may end up bounced around and their trust will be broken. This can also produces behavioral issues like low confidence or reactivity to situations.

Most people who try to rehome their dogs independently (ie: give the dog away to a random person , person they know, or even sell dog on Craigslist) are not successful.

We helped 2 specific cases where owner tried to rehome dog themself and the dog ended up bounced around to homes more than 5x. That means the dog became essentially lost and untraceable and lived in 5 homes. The dog was confused and it took us months to get the dog back to a good place. Then, once in a home.. it took the adopter 6 months to help the dog become the best version of themself.

The success rate of the dog being in a permanent home INCREASES when you work with a rescue. We have a 100% success rate. We have NEVER had a dog returned because we take the time to get to know the dog and the adopter’s new pack. If you work with a random individual, no matter how good their intentions..you are gambling.

We run a tight process and we check references, complete home visits, we hold meet and greets, sleepovers, and even help educate our adopters. We even run a background check and check zillow reports.

Outside of this information about our experiences and our process - it is against many state laws for individuals to breed and sell animals. In NH- if you adopt out dogs your required to be a rescue . You are required to obtain a state health certificate and have an adoption contract.

Bottom line: DO NOT adopt your dogs out yourself. Do not give your dog away. Do not sell your dog on craigslist. Do not put your dog for adoption or free to a good home on facebook .. do not do it to the dog.

Contact a local rescue. All it takes is 5 minutes and a google search.
